FILM

Cinematography and filmmaking as a whole have always been of great interest to me. Since picking up my first DSLR in 2015 when I started at the CTC I quickly developed an interest in photography and camera technology.

Film is an incredibly important part of American and world culture and art. Nothing has the power to truly immerse a viewer and facilitate ideas and information the way a great movie can. I value creativity, story, and visual style. I wish to create something myself and others can value, something people can feel. Film production requires an immense collaborative effort between writers, talent, and crew--I seek quality that everyone involved can be proud of.

I also enjoy and respect the technical side of filmmaking--I always jump at the chance to learn more about different camera systems, lenses, editing software, etc. Analog filmmaking such as Double 8, Super 8, and 16mm are of special interest to me.

I've recently been making the switch of NLEs from Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve.

Some of my favorite filmmakers:

  • Stanley Kubrick

  • Paul Thomas Anderson

  • Darren Aronofsky

  • Yorgos Lanthimos

  • Lars von Trier

  • Ari Aster

Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include— (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; (2) the nature of the copyrighted work; (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors. My use of clips from six films and four copyrighted images fall under several categories outlined in Section 107 of the Copyright Act. My use of all media here is non-commercial, and is being used in an educational setting. Each film clip used only represents an extremely small portion of each entire film, with less than five seconds used for each, while each film is well over an hour in length. Less than one percent of the films are used in my video. My reproduction of 5 seconds of each film will not dissuade any potential purchasers of the films in favor of simply viewing my video as the films are not even remotely close to being completely reproduced here. My use of these films and photos are of a critical nature; I am providing commentary on them as artistic works and evaluating their significance. The School of Athens and Apollo and Daphne photographs are used both in a critical way and as a means of visually representing the physical objects or artistic works they depict. This representation is also educational in nature, informing the viewer of the physical aspects of each work depicted. The works they depict precede this country's existence, and are not protected by copyright.
